It’s Time for NaNoWriMo!

NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month, is almost upon us! Every November, writers of all ages put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard to write a novel from start to finish — all in just one month! There’s no time for revision — the goal is just to get the story written down. You’ll have plenty of time to revise later.

In order to be a NaNoWriMo winner, you need to meet your word count goal by November 30. For adults, that goal is pre-set at 50,000 words. But for young writers (those 17 and under), parents and teacher set the goal. For example, I had some beginning writers in a class last year, so I set their goal at 1,000 words — enough for a solid short story. One year, I was teaching high school students, so we set their goal at 10,000 words.

When students are added to the classroom, they can watch their peers’ progress as the month goes by. My high school students were all in a classroom, and it was so much fun as we cheered each other on.

Wondering how to get your students started? The Young Writer’s Program has everything you need! You can download the free workbooks that take students through characterization, establishing the setting and the mood, developing the plot, and more.
