Draw a Hedgehog Step by Step

  1. Start with the basic shape of the hedgehog. His body looks like a lopsided oval.

Draw a line across the oval about ¼ of the way up from the bottom. Make the line slightly diagonal, going downward from the left side to the right of the oval.

3. Draw a small bump on the bottom edge of the oval. This will be the hedgehog’s snout.

4. Draw a small circle on the end of the snout for the hedgehog’s nose. Draw two more small circles about the snout for the eyes.

5. Now, draw the two ears. These are just curved bumps that sit on the diagonal line. Notice the inside edge of each ear lines up with the eye on the same side. This will help you put the ears in just the right spot.

6. Now add a small curved line for the inside of each ear.

7. Time to add the front feet! The feet look like little bumps too. Here’s the first one:

And the second one. Notice how this one touches the nose, too.

Then add 3 toes to each foot.

8. Next, color in the eyes and nose. Be sure to leave a small white spot in each eye. This is called the “catchlight” – the spot where the sunlight (or other light) reflects off the eyes. Sunlight can reflect off an animal’s nose, too. If you want to add this highlight, leave the top of the nose white.

9. The fur on the hedgehog goes on the lower part. You can draw fur by making short, curved lines going in the direction the fur would lay if you were patting the animal. Notice the fur on the face is very short, while the fur on the body is longer. Make more fur marks to show that the fur is darker (such as on the face); make fewer fur marks to show the fur is lighter (such as on the body).

10. Time to add the spines! These go in the upper part of the oval. You can draw a spine by drawing small angles. Most of the spines will point towards the back, though you can make some of them go straight up or off to the side.

11. To add a little more detail, you can darken the tips of some/most of the spines.
